I really enjoyed Seven Deadly Sins' stance on GMO; how they are not against them but feel that people should be more informed about what they are in and what they are. GMOs really do have a bad connotation associated with them at this time in history. I think what struck me was when we were having the discussion in class about how insulin for diabetics is also a GMO but no one seems to have an issue with that because of how practical and necessary it is in the world of medicine. It is pretty clear that GMO insulin saves many lives daily.
I know when I hear that something is "genetically modified" I immediately think "yeah that cannot be good for me it has been tampered with". I think that the meaning and semantic contagion of GMOs has been changing and it is associated now with being unnatural, compared to previously being associated with new scientific approaches and cutting edge development. 7 Deadly also stressed that there is some fear of the unknown associated with GMOs about how people are not completely sure how they will affect us because they haven't been around that long. There is kind of a sense of invasion and mystery of we do not quite KNOW what is in our food anymore. This was highlighted nicely by the GMO filled Oreos vs the Trader Joe GMO free cookie comparison. Overall I feel that this project took away some of my fear surrounding GMOs and I agree that it would be nice if they came out of hiding and companies were required to actually list what GMOs we are consuming in our food. Cheers!
