Descartes’ view of dualism with the
mind and the body has a large impact on the way that several people look at
religion. Separating the mind and the body means that neither can be
responsible for the other. This has serious implications from either side you look
at it.
I’m
going to look at it from a religious stand point. Usually religions of any sort have some sort
of guidelines that you’re supposed to follow. Since I don’t know logistics of
other religions I’ll focus on Christianity for this post because it’s what I’m
familiar with. In Christianity there are several guidelines that you are
technically required to follow, these range from physical limitations, such as
not having sex until you’re married, to more mental and emotional limitations
by controlling greed and jealously. While these aren’t things that the Church
forces you to follow, they are considered actions that are necessary to
completing salvation. Descartes comes
into this because if the mind and the body are split people have to find some
way to bridge the gap and control both in order to comply with spiritual
regulations. This means that Descartes poses a problem for Christians. If the
mind is separate that means that the body is a baseline of desire and therefore
you aren’t responsible your body’s actions. Therefore if Christians believe in
Descartes, that messes up with their whole belief system.
On the other side of things, non religious people have to worry about this as well. Have the mind and body separated poses a problem in the view of looking at things from a safety point. If someone violates someone or something else with their body, shouldn't they technically be able to plead "insanity" in these situations? If dualism is correct then we are not as connected as we originally believed. They have to be able to have some sort of control over certain areas of their body and be able to push down base human desires.

I wrote about a similar topic. I kind of talked about how reason and the belief in a higher power doesn't really line up. What you bring up is a very interesting point as well. I think that the Christianity belief system is a hard one to grasp in general and when you bring in the idea of what descartes says and trys to prove you have any more of a conflicting idea. The mind and body as two seperate amenities is a belief that challenges a lot of other ideas in this world.
