Pinker: The Blank Slate P.7
What I am going to say below is definitely a affirmation to what Steven Pinker in his article says that a person is most likely influenced by his or her culture, include society and his or her peers around. And I myself am a solid example. Since my dad was an engineer and was assigned to work at somewhere far away from home, he only came home twice a week. And my mom was also a full time worker, I did not really get to spend time with them. In order for them to "take care" of me, I was sent to a place where the majority of other children were also in the same situation. I learned there and I was raised there. I spent a lot of time with the teachers and kids there, though I am unsure what effects I got from that place, perhaps it has gone deep in my body and that I don't even realize. But there is one thing I am sure is that I was shaped by the culture more than by my parents. And still, I am changed, influenced by the society and culture after I came to the United States. When one is living under a different culture, one will be influenced easily, at least this applies to myself.
Although I do not know what genes I have inside my body, I think I am a blank slate and there should be no innate traits. However, it is quite interesting to see people who have special talents, to the point that they were born to have such gifts and I guess that's effects by genes? Please educate me here. In addition to that, from my perspectives, I believe everyone is born as a noble savage and we all are just products of culture; we are all painted by the painter. I think, when culture is everything, there is just no way to escape and it seems that it is not a matter of whether or not to believe in reality, it is more a matter of we are already in the reality. And the moment when you consider believing in the reality, the act of thinking and doubting is still part of the reality.
This is something that I've thought a lot about. I can't argue that people's environment shapes them because well...it's just really obvious. I do however think that there is a lot in a person's genes. My main argument for this is looking at babies themselves. Once you're around multiple babies for long enough you learn that each one is different. At this young of an age it's not plausible that environment could affect them. I think taking a serious look at the personality of babies can show a lot of certain things that we're born with.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we are the product of both nature and nurture. However I believe that without nature itself manifested in genes, there can be no painting. In other words, I like to think that nature is the arts supply shop where you obtain your paint. Nature selects the range of colors available, and nurture helps to build affinity for certain colors over others. Therefore we are not blank slates, but rather the color palette presented to the painter played by nurture.
